India sells more used cars than new ones now, and Maruti, Hyundai, and Tata still dominate the resale charts. But buying second-hand is a minefield of half-truths. Here's what people miss.
1. Original RC, not a colour photocopy
Always insist on the original Registration Certificate. A photocopy is a red flag — it could mean the car is hypothecated to a bank.
2. Hypothecation status
If the RC says 'HP with XYZ Bank', the car is still under loan. Get Form 35 and the bank NOC before paying.
3. Accident and flood history
Run the chassis number through the parivahan portal and ask the seller for the insurance claim history. A car with 2+ major claims has likely been in serious accidents.
4. CNG endorsement
If the car runs on CNG, the RC must say 'CNG' under fuel type. Otherwise it is illegal and uninsurable.
5. Pollution certificate (PUC)
Always valid? If not, you cannot drive it home legally.
6. Service history
Ask for the service book or, for newer cars, login to the OEM's customer portal with the chassis number to see the full service log.
7. Tyres, brakes, suspension
These are the cheapest things to fake. A good detailing job can hide worn-out suspension. Always test drive on a broken road.
8. Engine number on RC vs chassis
Match the engine and chassis number physically with the RC. Mismatch = stolen vehicle or chop-shop job.
9. Insurance transfer
Insurance must be transferred to your name within 14 days of purchase. Otherwise, claims will be rejected.
10. RC transfer at the right RTO
RC transfer must happen at the RTO where the car is registered. Inter-state transfer takes longer and needs an NOC. Plan accordingly.
When you buy through Ritesh Traders, all 10 of these are handled before the keys change hands.
