Resale value depends on three things: brand reputation, parts availability, and fuel type. Here's the data we see across our vehicle desk.
Two-wheelers: Honda Activa is king
Honda Activa retains 65-70% of its value after 3 years. Hero Splendor follows at around 60%. Royal Enfield Classic 350 surprisingly retains 70-75% — the cult brand effect.
Cars: Maruti dominates resale
Maruti Swift, Wagon-R, and Baleno consistently top the resale charts. A 5-year-old Swift typically sells at 55-60% of its on-road price. Hyundai i20 and Tata Nexon are close seconds.
What hurts resale
Diesel cars (post-BS6 transition uncertainty), niche brands (Skoda, Renault below segment average), and modified vehicles all take a 15-25% resale hit.
What helps resale
Single owner, full service history with the OEM, no accident claims, and a clean RC. White and silver cars sell faster than dark colours in North India.
The verdict
If you're buying with resale in mind, stick to Maruti or Honda. If you want to ride your money down to zero, anything works.
